"The art of packing is not in how much you take but in how much you leave behind."

So, you've got the bag, the plane tickets, and a sense of adventure—now it’s time to pack! But forget the usual advice about extra underwear or a trusty rain jacket (yes, they’re essential, but that’s a given). Instead, here are my tried-and-tested travel essentials you might not have considered for your first solo trip—but absolutely should.
So, grab a pen and take note—here are my Only Weirdos "must-haves" for your solo adventure!
Tip #1 - Follow My '70/30' Packing Rule
Minimalism when packing for your first solo trip is freedom. Let your suitcase breathe so you can too. Aim to fill your bag to around 70% capacity—who knows what you’ll need space for in that extra 30%?
Tip #2 - Take an empty Journal
A journal can be your greatest companion while travelling solo. Use it to record your thoughts, feelings, and creative sparks. For me, hundreds of pages of handwritten entries were what inspired me to start my own blog! Who knows what inspirations and realisations you might take from yours?
"Every entry in a travel journal is a postcard to your future self."
Tip #3 - Pack a First Aid Kit
Accidents happen. Trust me, they will. You don’t want to find yourself in a foreign country with an injury and a language barrier. For some reason, infections seem worse when you're far from home. Prevention is always better than cure.
Tip #4 - Don't Forget Exercise Bands
If you’re like me, exercise is a vital outlet for staying sane. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or someone who’s always wanted to get into the habit, a quick 10-minute morning session with exercise bands can do wonders for your mental health. Solo travel can be taxing, and those moments of movement will feel like a blessing.

Tip #5 - Compartments, Compartments, Compartments...
When you’re living out of a travel bag, things will get jumbled. Clothes, toiletries, wires, travel documents, and home comforts all seem to mix into one chaotic mess. My lifesaver? Tote bags.. of all sizes! They make packing and unpacking quick, stress-free, and organised. A happier, less frazzled you = a better trip.
Tip #6 - Bring a Home Comfort
If you’re like me, home is everything. No matter where I am in the world, I always have a small framed photo of Roxie (woof) by my side. Travelling solo can be tough at times, especially when you’re far away, so bring something meaningful to remind you of home and keep you grounded.
Tip #7 - Power banks are a must
One power bank isn’t enough—take two or three high-quality, long-lasting ones. Keep one for on-the-go use and another fully charged as a backup, stored safely in a dry compartment of your bag. When it comes to batteries, always be prepared! Being stranded somewhere unfamiliar with a dead phone isn’t the kind of adventure you want.

Tip #8 - Bring a Coffee Mug
If you’re like me and ritualise your morning brew, don’t forget your favourite mug or flask. Depending on where your travels take you, some places might lack good coffee or adequate vessels for that well-deserved cuppa. I also carry a small stash of instant coffee and tea bags—lifesavers for those remote mornings!
Tip #9 - AirTags For Your Luggage
Pop a discreet AirTag into your luggage and instantly reduce your stress levels. When your bag is in transit, having the peace of mind that you can track its location is priceless. It’ll make those anxious moments at the baggage claim much easier to handle.
Tip #10 - Get an International Driving Permit(s) (IDP)
In some countries, not having the correct driving permits can land you in serious trouble—or worse, leave you at the mercy of an extortionate bribe. Save yourself the hassle by picking up an IDP from any PayPoint store in the UK. They cost just £5 each, and there are three different types depending on your destination.
Bonus Tip: Stay Connected to Other Solo Travellers
One of the best ways to keep up to date with the latest news, tips, and tricks is to follow solo travel blogs. Subscribe to Only Weirdos for free to stay updated when new content is released. Don’t forget to tag us on Instagram and share your journey—we’d love to see where your adventures take you!
Final Word..
And there you have it! These essentials might not be the first things that come to mind, but trust me, they'll make your solo adventure a lot smoother and more enjoyable. Whether it’s a comforting photo of home or an extra power bank, it’s the little things that can make a big difference. Safe travels, and remember – the best part of solo travel is the freedom to discover not only new places but also more about yourself. Happy packing!
